Tiie longest debate in the parliamentary annals of New Zealand came to a conclusion in the House of Representatives last night, and without a division. It lasted six days, during which time 41 speeches were made The theme was worthy of the deliberate consideration given to it, involving, as it does, the present and future prosperity of the colony. The original motion was for going into Committee of Supply, to which Mr. Yogel moved an amendment condemnatory of the proposal of the Government to borrow £260,000 by way of a fresh issue of debentures under the Three Million Loan Act of 1863. Mr Eitzherbert moved that a rider be added to the amendment, which would have rendered it nugatory. So general a feeling manifested itself against the money required being raised in this way, that the Government, during the course of the debate, announced their willingness to accede to the wishes of the House and abandoned the proposal. The point being thus conceded, Mr Yogel asked leave, at the close of the debate, to withdraw his amendment, but the the Government would not allow this to be done, and tried to force a division. In this attempt, however, they failed.although their faithful follower, Mr. Haughton, called for a division upon the motion for going into committee ; for, after the doors had been locked, and the voices taken the second time, no one asked for a division, — Mr Haughton being unable to do so, as otherwise, he would have been compelled to vole with the noes, — and the motion was therefore declared to be carried.
