Tnis month shipping haa been very dull, partly owing to the almost unceasing gales from tho S.E. The Stirling arrived from London on the 4th inst, and the Ben Nevis from Leith, via Otago, is hourly expected.

The White Swan steamer, on her arrival from Auckland on the 17th inst., was seized at the instigation of Sir. A. Q. McCombe, of Melbourne, who, in his own right and that of others from whom he held a power ©f attorney, claimed to bo the representative of -iO-6±th shares, and as such entitled to the certificate of tho vessel, for the purpose of appointing another Captain (Wilson) to navigate her to Melbourne. The case was heard at tho Police Court, from whence it was removed into the Dirtricfc Court. After being argued, tho District Judge appointed 2 o'clock on tho following day (20Ui) (or tho delivery of his judgment; but at one o'clock on that day the Judge of the Supreme Court returned from Nelson, and as the District Judge has only power during the absence of tho Supreme Judge, the judgment waa not delivered. Proceedings were accordingly commonced in tho Supremo Court, and on the suggestion of His Honor a compromise woa arrived at, possession of the vessel being given to the new master for the voyage to Auckland, where the reputed owner Mr. Kirkwood resides, the certificate of registry being deposited with the Customs there until the Law Courts decide tho matters in dispute. The ciew . of tho White Swan, were at once, discharged by Captain Wilson, for having previously put him out of tho ship by the orders, of the foruiar Captain (Collem) but having shipped to be paid off' at Auckland, they recovered their wage a ami an additional months also, as compensation. The White Swan left for Auckland on the 24th.

Burning of the Bribantine Margaret. — This vessel was totally destroyed by fire on the sth in9t. She arrived here fvoji Syduey on the 13th May last with a cargo of 190 tons coals. Shortly after leaving Sydney she encountered a succession of easterly gales, during which portions of her bulwarks were carried away, and she sustained other damages which necessitated her being laid »p. The captain was absent in Sydney, consulting his owners, and tha vessel was in charge of a ship keeper.
