COUNTY MATTERS

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL WAIHI AND DISTRICT ROADING AND BRIDGE WORK The monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held on Wednesday, those present including the chairman, Cr. T. A. Barrett, and Crs. C. Christensen, S. H. Thompson, A. Lowry, H. Morrison, J. Pavkham, J. Fitzgerald, F. Thorpe and F. L. Franklin. The county clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, and the engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, were in attendance. The clerk reported that after paying all accounts the debit balance at the bank would be £2860, less £236 clue to the council for subsidies on Main Highways and Goverment grants to June 30 last. The demands for rates and water charges vere now being sent out. As shareholders in the New Zealand Counties’ Insurance Company the council had received substantial rebates during the year and it was decided to keep all vehicles fully covered. A letter was received from Mr N. Fergus asking for better access to his property on Waihi Beach Road. It was decided to approach the Works Department and request it to construct a portion of the proposed Waihi-Tauranga Road from Beach Road to Mr Fergus’ property, a distance of approximately two n Pes, to give reasonable access to the property. A letter from Mr J. Walford referring to an unused road adjoining his property on Beach Road was referred to C. Thompson and the engineer to investigate and report back to the council. Mr J. Rolfe requested permission to fence in portion of Pukewera Road, the council agreeing to raise no objection provided the fence was erected on a line given by the engineer. Councillors expressed the opinion that a number of fences were too close to the line of traffic. Mr L. W. Parker, of Paeroa, was appointed senior clerical assistant. Dealing with the United Nations’ Appeal for Children it was decided to follow the procedure adopted formerly of each district adjacent to a town joining with that town for the purpose of the appeal. In the course of his report the engineer stated that side roads were being held in the present condition with small amounts of maintenance metal from the Komata quarries and the usual grading. At the Waihi end of the county the crushing plant had worked practically full time and all roads had received maintenance. Roads receiving particular attention were Trig Road, WaihiWaitawheta Road, Ngatitangata Road, Patterson’s Road, Waitawheta Read and Old Waitekauri Road. To keep the hoppers down it had been necessary' to employ an extra truck on the longer cart. On • the Waitekauri and Golden Cross Roads good work had been done by the men engaged to clear and open culverts and water-tables. The widening of two bends and improvement to the grade ou the Waitawheta Road * had been completed and the whole length had been remetalled. Constant minor repairs were being carried out to keep bridges in repair but several structures that could not be repaired with inexperienced labour might have to be closed. These were being kept under close supervision and would not be closed unnecessarily. Timber stocks in the way of decking were practically exhausted and supplies ordered had not come to hand. The position was becoming desperate, concluded Mr Shaw. The report was adopted.
