AUCKLAND DEFEAT THAMES VALLEY GOOD MATCH AT PAEROA In an evenly contested match at I’aeroa on Saturday the Thames Valley Rugby representatives were defeated by Auckland B by 13 points to The Valley showed better combination and team work than was expected, jvhile their defence was sound. Auckland got the ball, from the majority of the scrums and the backs gave a display of accurate passing, mishandling being very infrequent while the wingers cut inside repeatedly to take a reverse pass from the centre when getting crowded for room. There was a large crowd present and the weather was the ground, however, being very heavy and both sets of forwards showing the effects of the hard going in the latter stages. The teams were:—

Thames Valley:'Waring, R. Dickson, L. Silcock, I. Kurtovich, S. Fislier, N. McMillan, R. Hayward, K. Millington, W. Nichols, R. Osborne, 0. Wood, W. Nettlingham, B. Coxhead, R. Duffin, A. G. Alach.

Auckland: D. J. Slater, P. McKay, D- Tate, H. Vernon, R. Peck. T., Kipa, R. White, R. Dilly, T. TePuni, . Up. Hutchinson, M. Menzies, Reidy, M. Foreman, R. Phelps.

Auckland opened play, but some good football saw the Valley on the attack, Hayward sending the ball' out to Fisher, to McMillan, to Silcock who was tackled. Wood came away from the tight with the ball, McMi.'lan cutting through with Nichols in support to reach the posts, Hayv/ai'd failing with a free kick and Nettlingham being pushed into touch in the corner as he dived for the line. Auckland cleared and v/ith play at half-way Duffin picked up . the ball to pass to McMillan for the latter to kick to the corner, Kurtovich racing up to gather in and cross for a try, the kick failing.—Thames Valley '3, Auckland 0. Auckland hooked the ball in their own twenty-five, McKay breaking away and kicking infield for Peck to pick up and pass back to McKay to score under the posts, Menzies converting.—Auckland 5, Thames Valley 3, Tate sent Auckland back to the attack and Menzies put a long free kick over the bar to

rrake the half-time score —Auckland 8, Thames Valley 3. Martinovich replaced Waring as fullback for the Valley in the second spell. The Auckland backs made several good passing rushes, McKay taking the ball to the Valley goal-line, Peck racing across the field following forward exchanges to pick up and sent a pass to McKay to score, Menzies converting.—Auckland 13, Thames Valley 3. The visitors continued to handle well, the Valley defence holding however and Hayward making a breakaway to kick, taking the ball again to score, the kick failing, the game ending with the score at—Auckland 13, Thames Valley 6.

In the junior match against the Auckland fourth grade team the visiters proved too strong for the Valley, the backs showing speed and dash and penetrating well whenever they got the ball, the game ending up 39 to 5 in favour of Auckland.
