VARIETY OF CASES

COURT SITTING IN WAIHI THEFT OF KEG OF BEER YOUNG ISLANDER FINED £5 Cases of a varied nature came before Mr W. 11. Freeman, S.M., at the monthly sitting of the Waihi Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. Theft of a keg of beer worth £1 18s, the. property of the New Zealand Government, was admitted by Frank Sudani, single, a native of Nuie Island.

Sergeant A. Bisset said defendant had been engaged clearing weeds and taken the keg from railway property. A complaint was made, with the result thai Constable K. N. Crisp later interviewed Suilani, who admitted (he offence. Sergeant Bisset added that he thought others were in it, but defendant, would not give them away. Nothing was previously known against him. A fine of £5 and costs was imposed. and Suilani was ordered to make restitution of the value of the beer. Abuse Leads to Assault Charges of having assaulted Joseph William Henderson at the municipal baths and of having used obscene language were admitted by Reginald John Daniels, aged 18. Sergeant Bisset said that after some remarks had been made to him defendant knocked Henderson about rather badly, and when the caretaker told him to leave he used the language complained of. Daniels was normally rather a decent, wellbehaved hoy.

To the magistrate, defendant said Henderson had called him "a black ," and that was what had started the trouble.

The magistrate adjourned the ease for 12 months. Offensive Behaviour

To a charge of having behaved in an offensive manner, Tuta Ngamu (Mr H. L. Boughton) pleaded guilty. The sergeant said defendant, committed the offence in an alleyway without making any attempt to conceal what he was doing, and was seen by a woman. Counsel pointed out. however, that it was a Saturday afternoon, and the hotels were temporarily closed, although admittedly there was a public convenience across the street. Ngamu was a married man with a large family. Mr Freeman imposed a tine of 10s and costs 15s. Overloaded 'Bus

"This offence was deliberately committed, and I can see it in no other light; but in view of the fact that the three charges arise out of the same set of circumstances I think it will be sufficient if I impose a penalty in only one instance." remarked the magistrate in the case in which Inspector Raymond Doggett, of the Transport. Department. Paeroa. proceeded against Samuel Bonnici, 'bus proprietor (Mr Boughton), charging him with having overloaded a 'bus to Waihi Beach on the evening of October 2!, when a dance was to be held; and with having no heavy traffic or special license for the trip. The inspector stated that the vehicle was

licensed to carry 25 passengers, bu

had actually carried •!(>. Defendant was lined £5 ami costs on the overloading charge and was ordered to pay costs on each of the other two.
