BOWLING IN WAIHI

LABOUR DAY TOURNEY TWELVE TEAMS TAKE PART PATRIOTIC FUNDS HELPED '‘Because of the rain and the green being too soft, no games were played by members of the Waihi Bowling Club on Saturday, but with a view to helping the patriotic fund the club ran a one-day tournament on Monday for local players and twelve teams took part. The teams were arranged by the selector, Mr J. Mannix, and the winning team was skipped by L. McGohagle, who had 4?, wins. Three teams tied with four wins each, but in the aggregate Mannix obtained second place. ‘Before congratulating the winners, the president, Mr R. Blackwood, announced that as a result of the tournament the patriotic fund would benefit to the extent of £27 10s, which he considered was a very fine effort indeed.

During the day heavy showers interfered somewhat and time was lost and the games had to ‘be curtailed. It was pleasing to note the keenness shown by the younger' players, a number of whom were in tournament play for the first time. Following are the .teams and the number of wins each secured:—

F. Crawford, V. Evans, J. Comthwaite, L. McGonagle (s), 4i wins. W. McCarthy Snr., B. Carnachan, W. Holdsworth, R. Gray (s); J. Pennell, G. Gobson, A. Taylor, J. Mannix (s) and D. Gardiner, B. Brown, J. Beeston, J. iPivac (s), each 4 wins. S. Sullivan, J. ‘Pearce, C. Dare, C. Dunstan (s), and J. Collins, W. Meiklejohn, V. Grinlington, J. Spence (s), each 3 w,ins.

R. Grinlington, D. Mitchell, A. Roberts Snr., S. H. Thompson (s) and A. Manhire, W. Capamagian, W. V. Hill, L. Leopold (s), each 2 wins. J. Olliver, H. Spence, S. Ashby, H. Shergold (s), li wins. L. Graham, N. Morton, K. Roberts, W. McCarthy jnr. (s), and T. Tennent, A. Carlyon, K. Meagher, J. Culpan (s), each 1 win. J. Cornes, R. Fitch, T. McDonald, R. Blackwood (s), no wins.

THROUGH THE FENCE (By'“Peeping Toni.”) . Back to the knot-hole at nine o’clock in the morning. What a day! Brrgh!! Meaning shivers. Not many creams to-day, everyone wearing their old clothes out. Started hy President Bob at 9.30, the Great Patriotic Stakes. Traffic Cop J. Spence first favourite, Silent Jack Pivac also favoured. Notable results of first round.. Wins for Spence, Pivac, Thompson, Gray and McGonagle. No! McGonagle isn’t • sick any more. He swung Leopold the Lion’s tail until he was dizzy (26-3). Pivac was away to a flying start from Dunstan and was never headed. Second round winners: Spence, Gray, McGonagle, Thompson, Mannix and Dunstan. Gray beat Pivac narrowly. Big Sid Thompson took McCarthy Jnr. for a ride, Sid doing the driving (21-2). Mac Jnr. didn’t know whether he was going or coming back. Mannix beat Leopold nicely, Leo failing to “pick it” again. McGonagle gave the president his second loss, not very thoughtful for Mac. Charlie opened his account by beating J. Culpan. Jack had quite a bit of bad luck. J. Spence managed to run H. Shergold in after a hard go.' At this time a heavy shower of hail, sleet, and what else have you (Brrgh, meaning more shivers) .caused an early adjournment for lunch—resume at one o’clock. Had a peep at the opposition on the “Rec” next door in the. interval. Not many customers there yet. The Maori oven was on the way. Just heard that Harry Horner is out of hospital. Well! That’s fine. Hope he can find his magic measure later

One o’clock arid back to trie knotliole again. Round three winners: Gray, Pivac, McCarthy Jnr., MacGonagle, Leopold and Mannix. Leo the Lion was very fierce this time beating Bob. This won’t do President Bob, that's three losses in a row, dear dear. Gray just managed to pip Thompson. McCarthy Jnr. beat Charlie Dunstan, just when Charlie was running into form too. Pivac beat J. Culpan, Jack Culpan said he would have won if he had some cotton wool. Another win for McGonagle—Shergold the victim this time—but only just. Mac said he was saving himself for the Christmas hams. Mannix gave Spence his first loss. Just heard Arthur Roberts fire his trench mortar on the Rec., it disturbed quite a few bowlers too. One trundler drew the shot for the first time in years. Saw Roy Don on the wrong side of the hedge. Come inside Roy, the water’s fine. The Maori oven has just opened up. Saw F. Aitkin close by, positively dribbling. Round four: McGonagle and Mannix drew after a hard fight. Pivac beat McCarthy Jnr. There’s no doubt that Pivac has the makings for a fine bowler if he lives long enough. Gray beat Culpan and Dunstan beat Thompson narrowly but should have won easily. Thompson tried to kill a head when he 1 was well down and finished two up. Thompson walked away blushing with shame and refused to take the score! What’s this? Why, here’s President ißob again . .'. Another loss . . Shergold this time. This is simply terrible. Bob, four losses in a row!

Leaders at the end of the fourth round were Gray (4 wins), Pivac (3), Spence (3), McGonagle (3*). Gray lost to Dunstan and McGonagle beat Spence by one, thereby winning the Great Patriotic Tournament by half a game. Congratters Mac. Well, well. Who do you think we have here. Yes, you are quite right. It’s President Bob again and he’s

done it again. President for sale cheap. A good chap, but he'can’t bowl; or is it propaganda for a third term of office? Well boys, I’ll be seeing yer.
