THE PERCENTAGE FOURS FIRST GAMES PLAYED RECORD MUSTER TAKES PART Games on the Waihi Bowling Club’s greens last Saturday were the first this season to count for the percentage fours and the keenness of the players may be judged by the muster, no fewer than 56 taking part. .This is the greatest number of bowlers that has ever played in percentage fours games in Waihi. In addition, one team represented Waihi at the official opening of the Hikutaia green.

Results of the games played on the local green were:— F. Crawford, G. Spence,. H. Anderson, R. Gray (s), 16, v. D. Gardiner, W. Pringle,' K. Roberts, G. Lorimer (s), 17. W. McCarthy Snr., V. THROUGH THE FENCE OBSERVATIONS WITHOUT “BIAS” (By “Peeping Tom.”) At the first peep was quite surprised. What a crowd! Bowling is certainly on the up and up at Waihi. Thought I was looking at the lawn at Ellerslie. Flower gardens too. Congratulations, greenkeepers. Losing bowlers may now sit by the flowers and brood over the shots they missed.

Selector Joe Mannix was very -busy and had all the horses at the post (pardon), -bowlers on the mats a little after two and the starter, President Bob Blackwood, put them away to a good start.

The sun was not in evidence so bowlers had to find a new excuse-for playing bad shots. Now for the games. McCarthy Jnr. made a good start by slaying a lion. -Very pleased to see Sid Ashby back after a long illness. He trundled a very mean bowl for the winners. Fireman J. Pennell did good work for the losers, a very promising recruit this. J. Beeston will probably be seen to greater effect later in the season. G. Lorimer put a very newt one over R. Gray. Allowing Gray to lead almost all the way, he was two down on the -board at the last end. He then gathered in three at the last end to fix it. “Good old George.” Noticed that youngster Ken Roberts was never far away for the winners. Whilst Crawford shaped very well for the losers. 'Had a peep at Town Clerk Murray making his debut against Harry Shergold. Guess they played good bowls where Murray came from. Meaning of course that Harry was second. Bill “Potty” played a good game for the winners. They couldn’t keep him off it “no how.” Wonder if J. Collins has any bo*ks on bowling. Noticed a great big bee flitting from flower to flower gathering in the honey with a raffle -book. Had another peep and saw it was F. Atkin working for the Patriotic. Did he do a nice job? He didn’t miss a single flower. How are the mighty fallen! Champion Joe Mannix second to J. Spence and Spence rubbed it in, too. J. Cunliffe Snr. was very consistent for the winning team. V. Grinlington was carrying the mail quite a bit for the losers. Had to* find another knot-hole to peep at the McGonagle-Wilson affair. It ended with Billy sitting on Mac’s chest- but it took a long time and a hard struggle to do it. Hope “Mac” has fully recovered after his sickness. C. Dare did well for the winners but J. Cornes did „ not let him have it all his own way “No Sir.” Jim McDermott made no mistake with Charley Dunstan. Jim had double figures before Charley started-. Bill McCarthy Snr., put some good ones down for the winners, also one or two they had to collect off :the next rinks. A. Roberts Jnr. did not have the best of luck, having quite a few near misses. The tit-bit of the day was the Thompson-Pivac clash. This ’ game was played in absolute silence. That is to say, no one -but the skips had anything to say and they said plenty. It ended with Sid sneaking in with a two-point lead over Jack. Jack still says that Sid talked him out of it. R. Mclndoe showed up well for Thompson whilst Gibson did very nicely for Pivac. And so ended a very pleasant day with “Peeping Tom” going home to put a poultice on his eye. Hope to have another peep at the big Patriotic Tournament on Labour Day.
