ALLOWANCE TOO HIGH

BOARD MEMBER’S COMMENT HOSPITAL BOARD DISCUSSION Some amusement was caused at Tuesday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital Board when Mr S. H. Brown (Waihi) declared that district members of the board were not worth the high travelling allowances paid them, and that he would like to see a reduction made.

In a brief discussion, Mr J. W. Danby neatly turned the tables by naively remarking that he quite agreed with Mr Brown as to the district members’ worth, adding that Mr Madgwick and himself (Thames Borough) were not rated high in the scale of allowances. In pointing out that it would be necessary for Mr Brown to lodge a notice of motion to reduce allowances, the chairman, Mr P. E. Brenan, said that personally he was not concerned, as he did not accept expenses, but in fairness to district members it had to be said that after paying transport and other expenses they had little over.
