MANY APPEALS ,

'SERVICE IN HOME GUARD UNDUE HARDSHIP CLAIMS SITTINGS OF BOARD IN WAIHI Many appeals, mostly on grounds of undue hardship, against service in the Home Guard, were heard at sittings of the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Waihi. The . chairman, Mr Edwin Edwards, presided/ ,#,nd associated, with him wcce Messrs E. J. Wilton and A. H. Blackmore, .and the secretary, Mr A... Ripley. The Guard was represented on the second day of the sittings by the adjutant, Lieutenant Thompson, . and on the third and last day by Ser-geant-Major G. Long. Case for Medical Board “This case is similar to one or two that came before us during the first day’s sittings,” remarked the chairman, referring to the appeal of Roy Alfred Jarvis, miner and a returned soldfier, who appealed on medical grounds. “If a nian is unfit he has the right of examination by a medical board—it is not for us to judge his condition.” The appeal was dismissed, appellant being recommended to get in touch with the officer commanding with a view to arranging a medical examination. Other Decisions Other cases were dealt with as under, brief reasons for each appeal being given in parentheses:— Charles R. shift boss (working hours making service difficult). —Dismissed. Richard M. Leach, farmer—Mr H. L. Boughton (St. John lectures and member E.P.S.—no objection by Home Guard). —Adjourned sine die, appellant to continue to serve in medical section of E.P.S.

Arnold E. Hancox, hotel manager —Mr Boughton (block warden E.P.S., medical grounds and staff shortage). —dismissed. Raymond D. McEnteer (illness in family).—Dismissed. Alfred W. T. Manhood (farm work in addition to usual occupation).— Dismissed, appellant to do service in second division requiring only eight hours a month. Cecil Newman, taxi-proprietor—Mr Boughton (family, circumstances; appeal supported by E.P.S. and no objection by Home Guard). —Appeal allowed, appellant to remain in Tansport section of E.P.S. H. C. (“Joe”). .Ashby, carrier—Mr Boughton (public interest; also member of E.P.S.). —Dismissed.
