BAND CONTEST

RESULT OF B GRADE TEST SELECTION. JUDGE'S NOTES. As is already known the Waihi Federal Band was successful in winning the B grade test selection with "Stabat Mater." The judge's notes are as follows: "Stabat Mater" (Rossini) —Allegretto: Opening first bar bad for intonation, second bar good; bar 7 and •8 and on very fair; ietter A euphonium could be more intense and subdued, wrong note on second beat (bar 20), reading of first measure sometimes has been incorrect, some bars 9/S time instead of 3/4. From B excellent band work, euphonium could be much more intense, but not louder. I commend you for accompaniment work. Allegro: Entry fair, tempo shade slow,, not always correct in

reading. Danger of turning into compound time, especially from melodic parts from D. Trombone playing well, but not a great deal of expression. The whole of the atmosphere of this movement should be intense and dramatic, even though you play subdued. The soprano at 3 0 (E) far too pecky in style, trombone still playing well, but how much more you could do. You have the ability to do so. Ensemble close, very good, I miss soprano. Perhaps you have not one. Largo: A very fine religious atmosphere you are creating here at introduction of duet, your intonation and tone commendable. Bars 12 and 13 by horn not quite correct in reading from letter (G). Duet fairly well played, accompaniments very good except horn and soprano, When euphonium enters he plays in a hurried style. Duet proceeding fairly well, but how much more pleading and devotional you could play this. On the whole fairly wel! played movement. The duet could have had much more intenseness. Cadenza only fair, not together in trills. From bar 5 euphonium and E flat bast* not closely tuned, though the musical effect is good. Bar 12 and 13 incorrestly read, splendid close. Allegro: This has been very well played indeed. It's a grand chorus and fugul requires different entries of each subject. This at times you did not do. Spoils definite going. Sometimes intonation not correct, for instance bars 10 and 11 did not carry accidentals right through to some other bar. On the whole a commendable performance, at all times had a devotional atmosphere but soloists could play much more intensely in euphonium solo and cornet duet. The euphonium solo competition was won by Bandsman H. McLeod, of Waihi, the judge's remarks being as follows:—

Harmonious Blacksmith" —Euphonium: Opening excellent tone and style, cadenza very good. Tempo trem. very good except failed on pedal notes where marked. Cadenza excellently played and glad to say excelled pedal notes this time. Theme: Very well played indeed at times. Intonation was faulty and your mannerisms of expression rather exaggerated simple theme and requires to be played in that manner. " Allegro: Fair playing here and definition. Allegro Brilliante: Very good indeed, excellent high movement, excellent articulation and detail. Bar 3: Again excellent playing and generaljy true notation, legato movement spJendidand musical ideas artistic. You are an excellent player and I congratulate you.
