CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETS

IMPROVING DISTRICT ROADS AND BRIDGES. THE DOMINION'S POPULATION. Several matters of local and general interest came before the Waihi Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting. The president, Mr. A. C. Thomas, presided. Reference to the recent official opening of the new Waitewheta bridge was made by the chairman, who said he had attended the function. "If we can do anything to improve roads and bridges in the district we should do it," added Mr. Thomas. "Something should be done, for instance, to improve the approach to the Victoria Street bridge, which is positively dangerous; and there are several roads that need immediate attention." He had spoken to a number of visitors to Waihi and all had been agreeably surprised at the growth of farming in the district. Better access would mean more farmers/and consequently more business Copies of remits it was proposed to submit to the annual conference of the South Auckland Associated Chambers of Commerce were received and discusser. One remit was that it be impressed on the Government the necessity for increasing the population by bringing out immigrants,, particularly those with a little capital.

Mr. S. N. Miller said it was not retired men that they wanted; such men could enjoy greater amenities of life in England. What they needed was young men eager to make their way in the world. On the motion of Mr. Miller, who was seconded by Mr. F. Ward, it was decided to reply that the chamber appreciated the views expressed, but believed that the Government was fully alive to the desirability of increasing the population by first organising primary and secondary industries to provide employment to justify an increase. Other resolutions passed were: (1) That this chamber give support to any efforts that can be made to lessen radio interference, and make inquiries as to conditions locally; and (2) that the chamber is fully in agreement that a universal half-holiday is desirable. It was decided to make efforts to stimulate interest in the chamber and to further increase the membership.
