CHILDREN'S THRIFT SCHEME

ORGANISING OFFICERS VISIT WAIHI SCHOOLS

PROMISE OF HEARTY SUPPORT

During last week two special officers, Messrs H. R. Fisher and F. B. Smith, the former representing the Education Department and the latter the Post and Telegraph Department, visited the Waihi and Waikino pub-

lic schools in conned ion with a nal

ional thrift campaign. Mr Fisher, formerly a teacher at Wellington, was two years ago loaned by the department to the Post and Telegraph authorities and his mission since has been —in company with Mr Smith —to visit schools throughout .'lie Dominion and enlist the sympathy of the teachers and children in the scheme, at the same lime addressing the latter on the subject of elementary training in the uses of money and how to spend wisely, whilst Mr Smith maintains contact with the local postmaster. The scheme in its present form is a new one in that it is now controlled by the Post Office Savings Bank and operates on a Dominion-wide basis. Its application formerly was confined to the city schools and in Auckland operated through (lie Auckland Savings Bank. The scheme is simple in its working and voluntary on the part of the children. Deposits of from sixpence upwards are received at the schools, and each child is provided with it special school pass book. Withdrawals are made only at a post office with the consent of the children's parents.

At both the Waihi and Waikino schools the head teachers have given tlie scheme their early support and quite a number of children have already made their first deposits. The visiting officers left yesterday morning for Tauranga.
