In recent years both breeders and dairy farmers In the upper Tharags district have been devoting increased attention to the improvement of stock in order that increased production may in some measure offset tho falling prices for butterfat. One of the number is Mr Maurice Crimmins, formerly of Waihi, who, in conjunction with his sons, established the now well and favourably known Leafield stud farm at Waikino, and whose pedigree Jersey ' catjfie have carried off many prizes ip the slipw ring and given ever-improving butterfat yields. Latest official information goes to show that the Leaflelcl stud has now added to its reputation by breeding the Dominion’s leading butterfat producing junior two-year-old heifer for 1932 in Leaflelds Goldbird, by Waipiko Max—Leaflelds Goldlight. Leaflelds Goldbjrd was one of a line of heifers sold by Mr Crimmins to Mr F. Geek, of Te Kauwhata, Waikato, and the fine performance put up by tho heifer under the C.O.R. test (305 days) is officially announced as follows: “Junior two-year-old: F. Geek’s Goldbird, starting age 2 years 8 days, 523.251 b fat, 9894.61 b milk; fat required for certificate 251.31 b. Record established 1932. The previous holder was R. S. Tuck’s Beloved, 500.301 b fat.”
Mr Crimmins, who has never hesitated tp ‘pay lopg prices for stock calculated tq imprqVe tfie reputation of the Leafield gtud, is (with the owner of the heifer, Mr Geek) to he congratulated on this very fine result, and it may, incidentally, be remarked that the sire (Waipiko Max) of the record breaker has only to get one more daughter to be classed as a champion butterfat bull.
