CONCERT IN AID OF CONTEST FUND AN ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME One of the most enjoyable concerts held in Waihi for a long time was given in the Academy Theatre on Thursday evening under the auspices of the Waihi Federal Band, the object being to raise funds to enable tire band to take part in the South Auckland bands’ contest at Hamilton during Easter week, fi’he band’s contributions to the programme wore a musical treat and the marked improvement, individually and collectively, in the treatment of the selections played must have come as a revelation to many. For this the tutor-conductor, Mr A. Carlyon, and Mr G. Henry, the bandmaster, are to be congratulated. On the vocal side the audience had an opportunity of renewing acquaintance with one of Auckland’s popular artists, Mrs H. Armstrong Keven (formerly of Waihi), whose delightfully rendered numbers were enthusiastically received.

The programme opened with a spirited march by the band, then followed a scries of songs, duets and elocutionary items, the contributors being Mesdames Jones and Lithgow (duct), Mr G. Armour (song), Miss M. Patton (song), Mr it. J. Caundle (song), Mrs Lithgow (song), Miss Grant (elocutionary item), Mr and Mrs Olphert (duet), Mrs H. Armstrong Keven (songs), Federal Band (“Souvenir of the Opera”), Miss Doris Mackie (Irish jig and Highland fling to the accompaniment of. the bagpipes by Mr T. A. Mac- , Donald), Messrs 0. Dunstan and sons, Eric and William Dunstan (trombone trio), Mrs Pollock (songs), Mr D. McPherson (humorous song), Bandsman H. McLeod (suphonium selection), Mr 11. Armour (humorous recitation, “Monty discusses the Turkish Question”). An enjoyable programme was brought to a close with a march, “Knight of the Road,” by the band

and the playing of the National Anthem. The accompanists for the evening were Mrs Jones, of Waikiuo, Miss Morgan and Miss B. Keren, who accompanied her mother. Mr H. Denby, secretary of the hand, took the opportunity during an interval of thanking the artists for their splendid services, and the audience, which suffered as a result of the unfavourable weather, for their attendance. On behalf of the band, he also thanked Mr Allen, the manager of the theatre, who, he said, had been a true friend to the band. Touching on the progress made by the band during the past few weeks, Mr Denby eulogised the work of the tutor-conductor, Mr Carlyon, and the bandmaster, Mi’ Henry, and complimented the players for their united response to the call made upon them by the officers. During the coming week members of the community would have opportunity of hearing the hand, including Goo,d Friday, whop it would play on the Recreation Ground. He hoped that there would be a ready response by the. people to the call for help to assis l the bandsmen ip getting away to the contest in Hamilton and to ill them out for tbe occasion.
