RAGE FOR MAN’S LIFE
SHIP’S ENGINEER POUND WITH THROAT CUT VESSEL ARRIVES TOO LATE By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, this day. A race of 274 miles to port to obtain medical aid for a dying man was made by the Hain line steamer Tregonnell which reached Auckland last evening. The effort, however, was in vain as the man died half an hour before the vessel anchored in the harbour. Deceased was Reginald Nicholas, second engineer of the vessel, and his death occurred under tragic circumstances. He was found in his bunk shortly before eight o’clock on Sunday morning bleeding profusely from a wound in the throat and with a pen knife lying near his right hand. First aid was immediately given by Captain S. Richards, master of the vessel, and also by the chief steward. It was seen at once that the condition of Nicholas was serious owing to the large amount of blood he had lost, and that the only hope of saving his life was to obtain medical aid as soon as possible.
