This afternoon tho Waiht third representative footballers are playing a match with the Paerca third grade team at the latter place. Tho Waihi police have been advised of the death of an old Te Puke resident, named Henry Hankey, about 65 years of age. It seems that Hankey, who was a teamster, was at the time driving a dray along the main Te Puke road, and by some means took the wrong turning, which led him along the old road where there is an embankment. The road narrows quickly, and the vehicle toppled over the embankment, where deceased was subsequently found, still alive. Ho was taken to the hospital where be died shortly afterwards.

During a discussion by the Borough Council last night, rela'ivo to Iho financial position, Ihe Mayor (Mr D. Donaldson) stated that the Council would be involved in considerable expense in onnection with the sittings of commissions to be held at an early date. Jlis Worship estimated that the Council's portion of the cost of the commiision to d al with the Ohinemuri and Waihou Eivers silting scheme would be about' £‘Boo, and that the Walhi Beach scheme would involve an expenditure of some £SOO.

In accepting tho resignation of Mr .1. Mcßae as Assistant Town Clerk at the Waihi Borough Council’s meeting last inglit, the Mayor referred in eulogistic terras to Mr Mcßao’s work during his ten years’ service with the Borough Council. It was no smidl comp'iment to the Borough Council and to Mr McEae thai he should have been chosen out of sixty applicants for the position of Town Clerk to the Morrmsvillo Borough Council. On behalf of tho Council, ho wan'd congratulate Mr McHae on Ins appointment, and would wish him success in his new sphere of operations.

Our attention has been drawn to certain circumstances relating to tho decision of the Waihi Fire Board to support tho action taken by tho superintendent of the Firo Brigade in suspending two members for disobeying tho order of a deputy, relative to turning out for a wet practice. The report gave the impres-ion that the finding was unanimous, but wo are in formed that this was not the case, and that there were some differences of opinion as to the position generaily, For instance, it seems that Mr IV, J. Moon was bv no means satisfied with the decision, in that ho felt that the circumstances leading up to the dismissal of ilio men had not been sufficiently examined or explained.

At last night’s special meeting of the Waihi Borough Council tho Town Clerk reterred to reports in (he street which suggested that there was not 'enough work for tho office staff and that it ought to be reduced. In answer to this tho Town Clerk said that he had been working on an average of 13 hours a day for months past, and he would ask that the Council appoint a committee to investigate the office work, with a view of determining whether the present stall was justified. While some of tho Councillors thought that this was unnecessary, it was decided, as the Town Clerk had himself made the request, that a committee consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Parker, Dale and Moon be appointed. It was alio resolved that tho committee fix tno salary of Mr Mcßae’s successor.

A very fine programme will be screened at tho Academy Theatre to-night, headed by tho Sclznick (lira. “'lhe Point of View.” Klaine Mammcrstein is the star of the production, and it may bo truthfu ly said that she has; never had a role better suited to her talent and ; personality than is found in the aitracj live and womanly character of Marjorie Ihorncrolt, ihe heroine of tho story. The director lias taken {articular pains to develop tho dramatic atmo phero ot the s'ory, no doubt being loft in the mind of the spectators as to tho character attributes of each individual,* from tlie hoy Maitland, who is the sou! cf d morracy, to 1 ho parent Thorncroft, ' struggling blindly with unhappy circura- 1 stances, under ihe influence of the erroneous point of view of the aristocrat The story has a touch ot comedy. Thera will also be a good supporting programme. j

“Wo will deal first with gas,” said ti e Mayor at ianight’s meeting of the Waihi Jiorougii Council, “les,” said Counc llor Moon, “ and it will bo gas flisi and gas last.” In connection with the striking of increased rates, wlu.-li was ap.reoa to at a meeting ot the Wsini Borough Council last night, a special meeting of the llouneil will be held next Wednesday fortnight for the purpose of confirming the resolutions dca'ing with the increased rides.

The annual report ot the superintendent of the VVailii Fire Brigade has disclosed the fact that of twenty-tight calls during the past year no less than half were the result of false alatms. This indicates that in a numbtr of instances the boxes must bare b.ea tampered with by irresponsible persons who should, in (lie event of detection bo severely punished for their stupid actions in calling out the brigade for no purpose.

An. exhibition of more than tmlina.vv interest at Tho Winter Show in Palmerston North w:ii- a specimen of a mw fodder plant known Spaoi,di Sul ip. The seed o, this was 'obtained through the Agricultural Department, and was plained at the Awahuri School in November last. The plant lias grown to a height of six feet or more, and apyears to bo well adapted to the district. In appearance, it is not unlike Jucorne, and it i,s said to lie eaten with relish by dairy sleek.

Tim authorities of the Melbourne Zoo admit it true that Mollie, the orangoutang, is oxtremly partial to nun and milk (says an exchange). Alolke's passion for strong drink is the result oj continual indulgi nee in rum for colds, when MoKie eonfiurtcd- a cold in the head, or a touch of ’'flu,’’ sin- was doctored with rum and milk, which proved very efficacious in her caee. Then she got sM many colds that her keeper began to suspect their bona tides, and none if is confessed that Mollio puts up a spuriou imitation that might (bveive. even a medical man.
