A social in aid of the Convent Schools will be held in St. Joseph's Hall on Friday evening next. The annual meeting of the Waihi Returned Soldiers’ Association will be held in the association’s rooms, Haszard Street, on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m. “ Wives of Men,” featuring Miss Florence Eeid, will be the leading picture at the Academy Theatre to-night. The story is very interesting, and holds the audience right to the finish. Excellent supports will be added to the picture, A very fine film, entitled “The Midnight Romance," with Miss Anita Stewart leading, will be screened to-morrow evening.

Mr P. Hally, who acted as chairman of the conference between the mine owners and the Miners’ Union in connection with the mining dispute, leaves for Wellington 10-day. It may be mentioned that at the close of the conference Mr Hally was complimented by the representatives of both parties for the fair and impartial manner in which he had conducted the proceedings and for the largo measure cf assistance he bad given in bringing the negotiations to a point which it was deemed would in all ! probability be found acceptable to the workers.

The veteran rifle shot, Mr A. Henderson- (a member ot the Akarana Club), who competed in the South Auckland Association's meeting at Waihi last week, won the Cambridge match. The veteran at the close of the match in question, was cheered by his fellow-competitors, and later received the congiatulations of the local president of the Waihi Rifle Club, Mr J. G. Comes. Rifleman J. Parslow, a member of the same club and also a veteran of the rifle and for many years a resident of Waihi, was also a familaf figure at the local range, and his name figured amongst the prize winners,
