THAMES LABOUR CANDIDATE
GIVES ADDRESS IX YVAIUI
Mr J. Purtel], the Labour candidate for the Thames electorate at the forthcoming Parliamentary elections, addressed a public meeting at the Miners' Hull last evening. Mr A. Parker, secretary of the Miners.' Uliion, who presided, briefly introduced the speaker, explained the visitor's mission, and urged the wisdom of giving him financial support in his candidature for the Thames seat.
Mr Purtell, in the course i/ his address, pointed out the necessity for Labour representation in Parliament, and in view of the desirability of re construction of the House for the future guidarioc of the country, and for the general good ofi the community he advocated the whole-hearted support of workers to bring about adequate Labour representation in Parliament Another phase he dealt with was the question of profiteering, pointing out that it was characteristic of the present order of society, and would naturally continue unless there, was drastic change in the future condition of things. lie asserted that the production of Unnatural resources of the country should be used in the interests of the people as a whole, ami not for individual pofit. Mr Purtell, in touching on the war, contended that since its close a big change had taken place in the minds of tho people, and said that in his opinion Labour would in the future have a much better representation in tho country's government, lie remided his audience that the laws were made by those who were pub into power by the people. Referring to wages and the cost of living the speaker pointed out the futility of high wages if the cost o-!' the necessities of life were not controlled. At the close of his address several questions were put and answered satis 'l'riftto.i.ijy. A hearty vote of thanks to the speaker for his abl.- address was car- I ried by acclamation.
