BRICKLAYERS’ FEDERATION

CONFERENCE AT WANGANUI,

The Bricklayers’ Conference reassembled at 10 o’clock yesterday morning, when recommendations were made in regard to •‘•he apprentices and the wages revised. , The conference went fully into the Arbitration and Conciliation and the following' resolution was passed: — "That this Federation proposes that the Arbitration Act should he amended in 'the following direction: That, in view of the cumbersome rule of citing every employer in a district in which a dispute has arisen, the conference considers the citation of the organising body representing the industry and an advertisement in the newspapers circulating in the district should be sufficient. That by reason of the red tape methods of the Labour Department at Wellington re the Arbitration Court and its prestige, the workers have little or no confidence in the provisions of its awards, and this Federation desires that each industrial district should be a selfconstituted centre, responsible only to the. Minister of Labour. _ In this way breaches and authentic interpretations would be immediately heard at the time when the evidence is available, instead of- waiting as is often the case.” “This conference urges the Government to take complete control of all accident insurance, controlled by a board based upon the practice as carried on by the Californian Act.”
