KAITOKE NOTES.

(Own Correspondent). On Thursday evening, 28th October, the Kaitoke Social Club held their final dance for this year. The function, a plain and fancy dress masquerade, was quite a success, the hall being well filled in spite - of the rough weather which prevailed, and which, it was feared, would prevent the attandance of visitors coming from a distance; but quite a large number arrived from Wanganui and the surrounding districts, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Mr Steven Allcock acted as M.C. and carried out his duties in his usual efficient manner, while Mr Copley’s music was much appreciated, as were also the extras kindly played by Miss Wilson and Mr Kirk. Miss 0. Davieia, as “17th Century,” won the first prize for the best fancy dress. Miss Reid, as “Jockey,” came second. Mr A, Brown, as “Mephistopheles,” won the first prize for gentlemen’s fancy dress. The second prize was won by Mr N. Brown, who was dressed as “A Lady.” The heavy rain that fell in the , early part of the week flooded the creeks, and, in places, last Tuesday, the roads and lower levels were under water. On Wednesday morning the vehicular traffic was blocked for some time by a large slip on Marengai hill. By the afternoon, however, a good deal of surplus water had drained away, and the creeks had gone down considerably. But about 3 o’clock, an unusually heavy downpour rapidly filled up the streams again, and, within less than an hour, the water was pouring across the road at the foot of Holder’s Hill, where one or two small slips came down. The road between Kaitoke and the town is very rough where the flowing water formed holes and runnels.
