THE PUBLIC DECEIVED

IN TINNED COMMODITIES. (By Telegraph—Special to “Herald”). WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. Public deception by the short Weight of tinned foodstuffs was a complaint which Mr Hawken brought under notice of the Minister of Internal Acairs this afternoon. He istanced tinned jam as a commodity on the purchase of which the public often get a larger percentage of tin per lb, than jam. The weight of jam varied from eleven ounces, to sixteen, the maximum, yet the wrappers always suggested there was the true measure of jam. As a remedy he suggested uniform sized tins. The Hon. Anderson, Minister of Internal Affairs, said it was not intended to introduce legislation this session, but the matter would be investigated during the recess. Replying to Mr Witty, he said the existing law would be enforced to rectify deceptions as far as possible, and, if it were necessary, more exacting legislation would be brought down next year.
