WARNING TO BOOKMAKERS

(By Telegraph—Special to “Herald”). WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. “It is quite clear that bookmakers and their clients are openly defying the law,” declared the Hon. Lee, Minister of Justice, when his attention was called by Mr David Jones to the published allegations that “laying the double” and other forms of money making are continuing in spite of the recent heavy increase in penalties. The Minister said he had received quite a number of betting cards through the post. The law would have to be observed, and he had on more than one ocasion discussed this matter with the Commisioner of Police, who had issued instructions permeating right down to that betting must be checked, and that not only bookmakers but their clients must be prosecuted, so that if anyone got into trouble after this warning it would be his own look out. “If the head of the Police Department and his officers are not equal to checking betting, I shall be very disappointed with the work of the Department,” concluded the Minister. Mr Glenn; “Give us a double tote!”
