WANGANUI RIVER ENDOWMENT

(By Telegraph—Special to “Herald”). WELLINGTON, August 10. Air Glenn questioned the Minister of Lands to-day regarding the position of a block of 12,000 acres of Wanganui River endowment, which might settle 25 soldiers. The area was made available last session, but nothing seemed to be done, the Lands Department stating that it had no surveyors. The Minister of Lands replied that one condition connected with tho settlement of thLsi block was that the areas required for scenery purposes must, not be destroyed. It was found that, if scenic requirements were respected, only 4000 to 5000 acres were loft for settlement. As the survey of this area must be done by a staff officer who knew tho requirements, both of the Scenery Preservation Department and the Lands Department, there was a difficulty in obtaining a suitable officer, but one was now available, and the survey would be commenced at the end of September.
