AMUSEMENTS.

EVERYBODY’S. A SPLENDID PROGRAMME. The big double programme at Everybody’s Theatre is proving a draw at the above theatre. Peggy Hyland, in The Merry Go Round, a special Eos feature on life in a travelling circus, and a thrilling live-act drama, entitled “The Beast,” starring George Walsh, together with two good Gazettes and a clever Mutt and Jeff Cartoon, complete a programme that is good, attractive and entertaining. " PARAMOUNT MUNICIPAL PICTURES. ‘ ‘ROMANCE OF HAEPY VALLEY.” The very big audience at the Opera House last evening were unanimous in their praise of the current Paramount Municipal Pictures programme. “Uncle Tom Without a Cabin” caricatured theatrical performers, and showed in a humorous way the happenings behind the stage during the production of drama. The star picture, “A Romance of Happy Valley,” was by the Paramount-Artcraft Company, featuring Lillian Gish and Robert Harron, and proved thoroughly entertaining. The programme will be repeated to-night. WANGANUI MALE CHOIR. A summary of the programme for the concert to-morrow evening appears elsewhere in our columns. Amongst the numbers to be given is Liza Lehmann’s song cycle, “In a Persian Garden,” for a quartette of soprano, contralto, tenor, and bass, with solos for the different voices. According to the ‘ ‘Herald” correspondent “He Knows” this work was first performed here by the Watkin Mills Party ten years ago, and it certainly seems a pity that such fine music is not heard oftener, so that its performance on Wednesday evening will be doubly welcome. The words are adapted from the “Rubaiyat of Omar Ivhayzam,” the celebrated Persian poet and philosopher, and the music proves a fitting setting, embellished by a piano accompaniment of unusual beauty. Amongst the individual solos, the ones most appealing are “The Earthly Hopes Mon Set Their Minds Upon” (contralto), “I Sent My Soul” (soprano), “As Then the Tulip” (bass), and the glorious tenor solo “Ah, Morn of My Delight.” The artists responsible for the performance of this number arc Mrs T. Spcrring (soprano),' Miss A. Astbury (contralto), Mr T. Spcrring (tenor), and W. L. Craig (bass). The concluding Choir numbers are two choruses from the Greek play, “Oedipus at Colonos.” The music is in Mendelssohn’s characteristic style, and is written for a double choir (each complete in itself), each part singing alternately, gradually combining till in the last chorus the full strength of choir and orchestra is lifted up in a grand triumphal appeal to the almighty gods for the projection of the heroes who arc to save their ancient land from destruction. On account of the large number of reserved scats, ticket holders are requested to be in attendance not later than 7.4b, to enable the ushers to cet everyone seated before the commencement of the programme. The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. waa held in Trinity Church parlour last Thursday, there being a good attendance. Devotional exercises were led by Mrs Upton, several members also taking part. Three rew members were initiated. Votes of sympathy were passed for Mrs Symes, Mrs Johns, and Mrs Cannons in their sad bereavement. Tho roll was called, after which the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The sick _ visitors’ report was received, as also the delegates’ report of the recent Provincial Convention held at Manaia, and other reports. Hostel business was discussed, and other matters dealt with. It was decided that an all-day convention for all local unions be held, and that Mrs Poryman and Mr?, Orabb be asked to attend. The meeting then closed with prayer and the singing of the Doxology.
