WORKERS' HOMES

COUNCIL’S SCHEME. NO START MADE YET. Inquiries were made by Councillors on Saturday night about the Council’s scheme for erecting workers’ homes, and they wanted to know how tho work was getting along. The Borough Engineer said ho was ready to go on with the work, but in view”of the proposal to place the station in tho Racecourse, he had asked for further instructions before starting on the site of Carlton Avenue. Practically all the material had arrived and a start could be made within a week or two. He had not received any instructions to go on with the work on St. John’s. Cr. Thompson, chairman of the Building Committee, explained how prices for building material had risen and he thought tho Council should again consider the scheme. He suggested that instead of building in concrete, concrete tiles should be used. Another Councillor remarked that it looked as if the Council did not have a scheme of building at all. Cr. Luxford asked whether anything had been done at all. He understood that instructions had been issued for tho erection of a block of houses. The engineer said ho had normstnictions to that effect, but had receivef*’ instructions to order material, and this was coming to hand. Cr. Sigley suggested that tho Building Committee should get to work and get a definite scheme of building, for ho understood that no such programme or even the estimated cost of each house had been made The discussion then lapsed.
