ENGLISH COUNTY MATCHES. LONDON, July 23. Surrey had a sporting victory at the Oval, beating* Lancashire, who made 208 in the first innings. Surrey declared at 278 for nine. Lancashire, in the second innings, made 160, and Surrey 91 for the loss of one wicket—Hobbs (not out) 57. Surrey knocked up the runs in 47 minutes, forcing a winning position against the clock. Makepeace, in 130 minutes, batted admirably for 64, but was poorly supported. Hobbs completely mastered Parkin. It was the best match of the season. Averages.—Batting: ITendren, total 1384 runs, average 72.48; Hobbs, 1566, average 57.68; Holmes, 1234, average 51.41; Russell, 1643, average 51.34. Bowling; Rhodes, 85 wickets at 11.17 runs; Woolley, 101 at 13.24; Parkin, 40 at 13.85; Cooke, 101 at 14.30; Fairservice, 72 at 14.50. Surrey leads in the County Championship from Yorkshire, Kent, and Lancashire.
