WANGANUI DEFEAT FBILDING. BY 4 GOALS TO 2. At Cook’s Gardens on Saturday two rep. matches were played, Wanganui A reps meeting Feilding A. reps, and Wanganui B playing Pending B in the early match. There was a fair attendance and fast and open games were witnessed. WANGANUI A V. FEILDING A. The teams took the field as under; — Wanganui (scarlet and white): S. London, S. Simmonds, G. Breed, G. Blundell, S. Hawkins; G. Connell (capt), P. Fraser, B. Mclntyre; V. Bradley, H. Mantis; G. Howatson. Feilding (blue and black): Beach, Smart, McLeod, Hostick, Burgess; Simmonds, Chadwick, McDougall (capt.); C. Burgess, Wilson; Hoskins. Referees; Messrs Fisher and Spurdle. THE PLAY. Feilding attacked from the opening bully and some close play followed in the Wanganui quarter, Feilding eventually shooting a poster. Maintaining the pressure, some hard and prolonged play in the home circle culminated in Pending opening the account, Hostick finding the net with a splendid shot. —Feilding 1, Wanganui 0. After some desultory play the home forwards got going and from a forward rush Blundell missed. Close and hard play followed in the Peilding 25, but sound defence by the blues smothered all (attempts :\t goal. Eventually the blues raised the siege, but Mclntyre nipped the attack in the bud, and with a long hit again put the home side on the offensive. Hawkins centred with precision and Breed notched a splendid goal.—Feilding 1, Wanganui 1. The home side renewed the attack right from the bully, and the resultant rush ended in Simmonds finding the net.—Wanganui 2, Feilding 1. Half-time came shortly after with the home team defending hard. SECOND SPELL On resuming give and take play ensued. Wanganui attacked and a lot of close play followed in the Feilding quarter. However, a score failed to materialise. A hard rush by the blues transferred play to the home circle. A free hit relieved, but the blues were soon back again, the übiquitous Hostick shooting wide. Play had now become very fast and exciting, play travelling up and down field in a succession of attack and counter-attack. Prom a scramble in the Feilding circle Simmonds found the net, but was brought back for a breach. A fine forward rush by the Wanganui vanguard saw Hawkins miss. Strenuous play followed in the blues’ circle. Prom a corner hit Blundell shot, Breed securing the ball on the rebound and tapping it home.— Wanganui 3, Feilding 1. Feilding rushed play to the home circle, and Hostick found the net.—Wanganui 3, Feilding 2. Prom a throw-in in the blues’ 25 Breed secured in good position and notched the final goal. The game ended soon after with the scores: Wanganui 4 Feilding g Feilding proved themselves a particularly strong combination, and gave the local reps a great tussle for premier honours. Hostick was the star of a very nippy forward line. Chadwick in the halves, and C. Burgess and Y/ilson (backs) were conspicuous. For the, Wanganui reps, Breed at centre, and Hawkins (wing), were the pick of the forwards. McIntyre played a brilliant game in the half line, while the backs acquitted themselves well. WANGANUI B V. FEILDING B. This was a very even game throughout, Wanganui coming out the winners by 3 goals to nil. The first spell ended with the score 2/0, Sinclair and Trigger scoring for Wanganui. in the second spell Trigger notched another goal. Jones was the shining light of the Wanganui. forwards, while Goldsbury in the halves, and Sheppard and Cave in the back division were prominent. For Feilding Spears was the pick of the forwards and Griffin of the halves. Brookes and Pitzherbert were sound at back. Messrs Kernohan and Douglas controlled the game. The visiting players were entertained to a dinner given by the Hockey Association at the Federal, in the evening.
