THE LEAGUE GAME. WELLINGTON DEFEATS HAWKE’S BAY. WELLINGTON, July 4. The representative match, Wellington v. Hawke’s Bay, was played at the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon. It was a fast and exciting game throughout. There was a good attendance. The ground was fairly heavy, and against spectacular play._ Wellington attacked, but their efforts wore fruitless. Hawke’s Bay then took a hand, but solid defence intervened. After fast and interesting play, Pollock scored for Wellington. Nicholls failed with the kick. After fast and open play, passing between Scott and Childs allowed Rigby to score, but Cidlds failed with the kick. Play was very fast, each side taking turn in attack. Hawke’s Bay forced twice. _As the result of good moves from openings by McCarthy," Burrowes scored, but the kick failed. The second half opened with a strong attack by the local players. A fine passing rush between Pollock, Levy, Scott, Rigbv and Salisbury saw the latter score. Wellington 9 ; Hawke’s Bay 3. Salisbury and Rigby were both nearly over a few minutes later. Hawke’s Bay attacked strongly, but were repulsed. Good passing by Pollock. Levy and Salisbury gave Nicholls a try. Wellington, throwing the ball about, had the best of the game, but they mot with solid defence, McCarthy and Franklin doing good work. Fast and open plnv intervened until from a high kick, McCarthy scoring between the "posts, Findlay converting. With only four points between the teams, plav was strenuous and mostly in Wellington’s favour, but there was no further score. Wtellington unlucky on three occasions. An exciting and interesting game left the home team, successful by 12 to S.

AUSTRALIA DEFEATS ENGLAND. 21 POINTS TO 8. SYDNEY, July 3. Australia won the second League football test and incidentally the ashes to-day by defeating Engand by 21 points to 8. Australia overshadowed the Englishmen at most points of the game. Over fifty thousand people witnessed the match, which was played in ideal weather, though the ground was greasy as the result, of rains. The visitors started well and for a long time it was anybody’s game. Botli sides keenly felt the responsibility, the outcome being a close careful game to the detriment of brilliancy. Gronow opened the scoring with a penalty, Fraser following with a field goal and equalising. Horder then initiated a brilliant passing effort down the wing. Potter getting across. England replied with a fine rally on the opposite wing, a mix-up ending in Johnston scoring, but Gronow failed to convert and the scores read five ail. Play at times became very fast despite the heavy ground, and both sides wore responsible for fine flashes of play, one ending in Farnsworth getting over the line, but Burge failed with the kick. England replied with the passing gem of the match, the backs traversing three-quarters of the field till Gallagher got across. Gronow’s kick at goal missed and the score at half time was eight all. In the second spell after a lengthy period of level passing the Australian backs raced down the field, Hordcr passing in to Farnsworth and then regaining the ball and scored under the posts. Horder kicked the goal. Vest scored later but Horder missed the goal.

BAY OP PLENTY v.. WANGANUI. A DRAWN GAME, The weather was fine for the representative Rugby match. Bay of Plenty v.Wangauui, played oil the Eec. on Saturday, and there was a very largo attendance, It was a fast, hard but cleanly and evenly contested game, but quite devoid of brilliancy. The visitors had the advantage in weight in the forward division, and almost invariably gave the locals the “loose head,” with the result til at scrum work, from the 'Wanganui point of view, was very unsatisfactory. Added to this it was plain that one or two were not doing tfieri share so far as putting weight into th* scrum was concerned, and the ball in consequence rarely came out cleanly. This, coupled with the fact thafi ono or two of the Bay men played a good deal off-side, and safe tackling by the 'visitors, prevented the, local backs from doing much with passing rushes. It wad unfortunate that both the local fiveeighths should have been knocked out early in the game, as this disorganised the back division. So far as the visitors were concerned, they had two or three backs (notably Mason and Reke) who would have given a lot of trouble had they been fed properly, but there was a lot of mulling, which lost them opportunities. Then, again, the Wanganui forwards (headed by Ross and Boswell) were tackling in great style, and the visiting backs wero unable to do much. The teams wero: WANGANUI (Blue and Black). Pull back, T. Quirke; three-quarters, R. Phillipson, R. Scott, Strachan; fiveeighths, F. Collier, J. Lockett; half, J. Hiroti; wing-forward, Boswell; forwards, A. Dillon, J. Stewart, W. Ross, C. Danielson, A. Lockett, P. Alabaster, Wilson.

BAY OF PLENTY (All Black). Pull back, Borrell; three-quarters, Mason, G. Rogers, Stewart; five-eighths, Reke (capt.), Ru Rogers; half-back, Brady; wing-forward, Hutchings; forwards, Walker, Petterbridge, Gardiner, Heather, Munro, Reid, Pattie. Referee, Mr P. C. Atkinson. THE PLAY. Wanganui followed up the kick-off with a rush into the Bay quarters, when) Hiroti secured from a scrum and sent out to Lockett, who hung on too long, and lost a chance. The locals continued to attack, a mark by Brady bringing temporary relief, but then a free td Wanganui gave Alabaster a chance within easy distance. His kick was, however, charged down. Securing from a line-out, Ross sent the ball to J. Lockett, but good attackling stopped the movement, and Bay forwards, headed by Gardiner and Heather, took play to Wanganui 25 where Hiroti saved well. A big kick by Borrell went behind, and the locals forced. Some play in neutral territory followed, and then the bine forwards had a chance to get away with a dribbling rush, but all triad to pick up the ball instead of keeping it at their toes, and the opportunity was lost. A speculator by Reke went right back to Quirke, who missed taking badly, but he gathered in and found the line.

The play was fast aud hard, but of a scrambling order, neither side playing with any combination, while the backs were mulling a lot. The blacks got close to the line, bnt a free relieved the locals. Boswell set off with the ball, but was unsupported, and was forced out. Dillon started a dribbling rush, but A. Lockett spoilt things by trying to pick the ball up. The blues kept up the attack, good tackling by Boswell stopping the visitors from getting away on several occasions. Prom a scrum Hiroti sent the ball to J. Lockett, who made a fine opening, but his pass to Phillipson was a wild one. The blacks, headed by Hutchings and Gardiner, invaded Wanganui half, and essayed gome passing, but faulty handling stopped them. The blues swept back into Bay half, where Collier again made a good opeing, but passed wildly to Phillipsou. At this stage J. Lovkett was badly shaken, aud shortly afterwards Collier hurt his ankle and had to retire, Scott going up to the five-eight, Strachan going as centre, and Glenn on the wing. Resuming, the blues got close to the lino, A. Lockett being conspicuous, and then, as the outcome of a line centring kick by Phillipson, Boswell secured, made a good opening, and sent on to Phillipson, who had a clear field, but Hutchings proved too speedy, and tackled him from behind.

Fast following up by Strachan all but ended in a score. 'The blacks cleared their line, and took play to Wanganui half, where J. Lockett was injured and had to retire, Clare going on. A clever mark by Strachan saved the blues, but the blacks indulged in some passing, Hutchings and Stewart being prominent, which might have ended iu a score, but for a pass going astray. The visitors continued to attack, and had another chance to score, which was lost through a bad pass. Boswell, Scott, and Ross, by good play brought relief to the locals, and then Stewart dribbled well into Bay territory. Petteridgo (Bay) was hurt, his place being taken by Royal, who distinguished himself by a strong run just before half-time sounded.

SECOND SPELL. J. Lockett took his place in the local team on changing ends. Strachan and Danielson were instrumental in taking play into Bay territory, where Stewart had a shot from a penalty, bnt the kick was charged down. Offside play by the visitors gave Wanganui several free kicks, from one of which Alabaster had an unsuccessful shot. 'The blacks took play to midfield, but Danielson and Phillipson headed a blue rush to near the line, where some passing between J. Lockett, Strachan and Glenn ended iu the latter crossing the line, but losing the ball. ° Some fast, even play followed. Then Bay atacked strongly, Hutchings, Reke, and Mason being prominent, but Bos-

well, Scott, Ross, and Quirke were defending well. Ross and Phillipson, by smart play, beat the visitors back to midfield, from where Ru Rogers broke away in fine style, but was unsupported. Some passing by the black backs followed, but the passing was crude, and Scott relieved with a great line kick, which put Bay on the defensive. A fine blue rush to the line followed, and Alabaster got over the line, but knocked the ball on. The blues kept up the attack, the play being exciting, but Wanganui could not score, the blacks clearing their line, and the game ended without any score.

In the evening, the two. teams were the guests of the Wanganui Rugby Union at a dinner at the New Criterion Hotel, there being several visitors and Union officials in addition to the players. Among the guests were Messrs Proctor (President Horowhcnua Rugby Union), and M. Winiata (Horowhcnua secretary). The dining room was very tastefully arranged, the tables being formed into a hollow square, the guests occupying the outside, while inside the tables was a very effective and original colour scheme of decorations. There were numerous pot plants and specimens from the garden nursery, intermingled with the foliage of which were quite a number of electric light bulbs of various colouring ingeniously arranged. Prom the central chandelier were streamers of blue and gold and blue and black ribbons, the official colours respectively of Bay of Plenty and Wanganui, the whole making a very pleasing and effective display. Host Rliimes was freely and deservedly complimented on the splendid effect produced. The good things provided were done ample justice to, after which a short toast list was gone through, interspersed with musical items by Messrs Oliver, Rutledge and Wilkie.
