MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

MEETING OP THE COUNCIL, The usual meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, tho Mayor presiding. There were also present: Cra. Sharpe, Thompson, Burnett, Spriggens, Gower, Liffiton, Richardson, Luxford, and Aitkeiu REPORTS. Reports from several committees were received as under: WORKS. Street Maintenance: In view of the amount provided in th© estimates having been now expended, tb© Committee recommend that an additional amount of =£15(10 be authorised for expenditure on street maintenance to 31st March, 1920. No. 3 Line Road.— The Committee recommend that the work of improving this street, aa provided for in the recent loag, he proceeded with. Painting Town and Dubiin Street Bridges; We recommend that this work be undertaken and that tenders be invited for the work. The committee met Mr A. G. Big noil, representing th© Sedgebrook Brick and Tile Company, and inspected the drain fronting the company’s property in Georgetti Road. The Committee recommend that this drain be piped and filled in at the eita mentioned, provided that the cost of any portion of same found to be on private property be borne by the owners concerned.—Adopted. RESERVES.—Lease of Site for Kiosk, Dime Hill: Tho Committee met Mr Poison in reference to his letter to the Council relative to the conditions for tb© proposed lease, and he has been invited to state on what terms he is prepared to take up a lease of the site. — Adopted. TRAMWAYS. Gonvi.Ho Tramway Board’s application to have th© age under which children are allowed to travel for half fare raised from 12 to 14 years; The Committee has decided to hold this matter over nntil Hi© end of the present financial year, and in the meantime to ascertain what is done in other centres. Order in Council: We recommend that application be mad© for all extensions except that to St. John’s Hill, which be held over until th© Railway Department is ready with plane of its proposed deviation of tho line.— Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters from correspondents were dealt with as under: BRITISH GOODS.—Th© New Zealand Association of British Manufacturers and Agents forwarded a copy of a resolution which urged that all public bodies should, all things being equal, give preference to British good for municipal trading ventures and for other purposes. Th© appeal was endorsed, and the hope was expressed that tli© industrial position would soon improve, so as to enable more confidence to be displayed in placing orders with British firms. BATHS.—An application for tho use of the Corporation Baths for Wednesday evening, February 4tb, for th© purpose of bolding a swimming carnival, was made by the local Swimming Centre. The application was granted, no fee being fixed. OPENING OF ROAD.—Eight residents of the locality applied to tho Council to construct that portion of the Town Belt Road lying between London Street Extension and the Borough boundary facing Sprir.gvale. The request was hacked up by a deputation, which pointed out that there was about 14J- chains of road formation to he. made. The matter was referred to the Works Committee for consideration. WILLOWS.—Mr A. Gray, on behalf of the Rowing Association, waited upon the Council with the request that the higii willows along the regatta course, which prevent a view of the races being obtained from the banks, should bo cut. The Engineer was instructed to have sufficient willows cut away go as to give a clear view of th© course. UNION.—A letter was read from the Wanganui Borough Employees’ Union notifying the Council of its formation, and asking 'the Council to give it preference. GLASGOW LEASES.—Two applications were received from Borough lessees for conversion of their leases to Glasgow leases. These applications were referred to the Reserves Committee.
