Australian and N.Z. Cable Association
SYDNEY, January 27.
Matters in connection with the marine engineers’ strike are apparently at a standstill. Hopes of settlement appear to be waning. Meantime unemployment and inconvenience resultant on the shipping tie-up are increasing. A number of factories have closed or reduced hands. The latest outcome is that 1500 meat packers have been rendered idle. Hundreds of waterside workers and dependants are feeling the pinch seriously, and are asking the Government for relief. , A formal month’s notice has been 'given to many deck officers by shipping companies.
