GASWORKERS' DISPUTE.

HEARING BY CONCILIATION

COUNCIL,

(Per United Frees Aneoeiation.) WELLINGTON, January 26. The hearing of the dispute initiated by the Wellington Gas Company with ita employees commenced at the Conciliation Council to-day. The men’s representatives took up the position that while they were prepared to reach a settlement before a Commissioner, they would decline to go to the Arbitration Court for the following reasons:— (1) That the Court, not being conversant with the conditions, could not give a satisfactory award; and (2) the men should have the final say in framing the conditions. It was agreed that the representatives of the men should obtain full power to conclude an agreement, the men to return to work under normal conditions pending further negotiations. The company, on the other hand, agreed to reirstate seven men, including the president of the Union, dismissed yesterday for declining to work overtime. The hearing has been adjourned to the 16th February.
