RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE.

, To the Editor. Sir,—Re the election, as far as Wanganui is concerned, is it a religious or political campaign? Two nights running I went to hear two candidates, Mr Yeiteh and Mr Cuttle speak, and when question time came one religious body in particular seemed to bo the chief topic for discussion. These are some of the questions: 1 Re free carriage of Catholic children 6n railways to their own schools, which are supported by the Catholics themselves. Are not Protestant children carried free also to State Schools, which the Catholics are compelled to support equally as much as Protestants? 2. Alexander School being exempted from rates. What about-our other local Protestant schools? 3. Exemption, of Markt Brothers from conscription. What about religious objectors, who perhaps hadn’t any siM important work as toe education of the rising generation? Why make this distinction? 4. Government, inspection of Convents. Wculd Mr Cuttle explain through' your paper whaifa ha means when he says he would have them inspected “if necessary.” Now, these Catholic Institutions have been mu for the last 50 yearn, more or lees, and can any one enlighten mo as to whether these places have not been conducted respectably, as I am a voung mother of a family of girls, and, being a Protedbant, I would nob like to think I am sending my girls to a school where they will not be brought up a credit to me? So far, I feel quits content cn sending them to the Convent, Would it not be fairer if onr candidates declined to answer any religious question, and looked to the welfare of onr town and country districts instead of encouraging dissention? Trusting I have not taken up too much of your valuable space.—l remain, yours sinserely, EVA SCOTT.
