PHENOMENAL GALLOP BY GLOAMING.
Some interesting work was done at Riccarton this morning, says the special correspondent of the Dominion, telegraphing on Tuesday. The trial grass Avas open for fast work, ■ and Avas used freely, while a number of horses sprinted on the plough, undone or tA\'o Avore alloAA’od to uso the outside of the course proper. The onlookers had the pleasure of seeing the greatest mile gallop that has been done at Riccarton for many years, if not the best since,.the course Avas formed. Gloaming, with shoes on, carrying B. Deeley, and on the outside of the course proper, cantered round until nearing the mile peg. Jumping off, he ran his first furlong in 11 3-ssec, two in 23 4-ssec, three in 35 4-ssec, and half a mile in 4.6 4-ssec. Running on strongly against the fresh north-east breeze, he raced past the Arinning post in the prenomenal time of 1.39 -25, having covered the last half-mile in 50 3-ssee.
