CHILDREN’S DAY.

ON THE RACECOURSE.

Tiio Children's Armistice Day celebrations were continued after we went to press ’yesterday afternoon. On arrival at the racecourse the procession was joined by another contingent of small children, and each school marched to ills respective alotted area. There were between 3000 and 4000 children present and the provisioning committee, under the leadership of Mr C. .1. Sharpe, is to be congratulated on the excellent manner in which the catering operations were carried out. Dustin’s, Ltd., are also Ito be complimented on the manner in which they prepared everything. , The kiddies enjoyed themselves immensely throughout the whole afternoon, and Hie various side shows, merry-go-round, captured Hying machine, wore the chief centres of attraction for the, young. These did some great business, a charge of fid being made, against which there was no little antipathy, as most expected that a very small charge was being made, and .many children who did not come prepared were unfortunately disappointed. The niei-ry-go : round proprietors, however, during the afternoon, made some concession, allowing 1500 children under Standard I. free rides between 3 And 4 o’clock.

A most enjoyable and attractive feature of which special mention should be -made were the live folk-dances and marches performed by the Girls’ College. The dancing was most excellently and pleasingly performed.. The Turakina. Maori Girls’ College are also to be complimented on the really excellent performance which was given by them.

The adult attendance during the afternoon was very large, .£92 being taken at the gate, representing nearly 4000 people. Mr Wm. Bruce, chairman of ttHie committee responsible for Children’s Day, pays a warm tribute to the teachers and other? for the commendable manner in which they carried out their duties. Country children were present in great force, and there were children who came from as far as Koromfci (up the Wanganui ’River).
