HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

■ -Or ■ > MOVEMENT TO RE-ESTABLISH. A number of enthusiasts in horticulture gathered at the Borough Council Chambers last night to discuss the resuscitation of the' Society. The chair was take it by Mr W. J. Treadwell, who remarked that it was about three years since the last meeting of the Horticultural Society was held ; even then the amount of interest which should have been given was not shown. Mrs Snisted did good service, as also did Mr ’Gower. Shows were held, and exhibits wore good. When the war broke out, and the secretary, Rev. W. B. Scott, was transferred, the Society fell into abeyance. It was only right that a town the size of Wanganui should have a Horticultural Society. There wore many people hero who kept beautiful gardens, and there were enthusiasts who could assist the Society. The Society, however, was really defunct, and should be re-estab-lished. He moved that the Horticultural Society be re-established. Mr J. A. Neame, iu seconding the motion, remarked that it was a remarkable thing that in a town the size of Wanganui, which had many beautiful gardens, there should be so very little interest displayed in the Horticultural Society.

Mr A. Gower said he could not understand why in a town like Wanganui they could not have a most successful Society. The surroundings and gardens were such that they should have a very successful Society. There was one very great want which had a groat deal to do with the non-success of the Society, and that was not being able to obtain a. satisfactory room for exhibition. Latterly, however, try as they could, they could not got people to even visit the shows, the Society being supported merely by members. This should not be. Now officers should be appointed, and he thought that with new blood and energies and suitable quarters, the Society would be successful . Mr Neame referred eulogistically to Mrs Suisted’s services, and hoped that she would bo retained as secretary. He added that what was needed w r as local representatives to work up interest iu the suburbs. The town was too large to be controlled from a central body. The motion was carried. It was decided that those present form themselves into a canvassing committee to report to a subsequent meeting. A sub-committee was appointed, with full power to arrange with shop keepers for a chrysanthemum exhibition.
