THE MAYOR AND COUNCILLOR SIGLEY.

To The Editor. Sir,—l was extremely gratified to read Cr. Sigley’s open letter in reply to mine. In support of his suggestion that there is “interference with the staff,” he can only refer to one incident which happened four years ago, and which was fullydiscussed at the time. The then Council had approved of certain loan proposals which were being put to the ratepayers, and I called the Borough workmen together to address them in support of the loan. Most of them are ratepayers, and I take it they are just as much entitled to attend and discuss loan proposals as any other ratepayers. I certainly did have them knocked off half an hour earlier on that particular Saturday morning in order to meet them. In so doing I may have made a. mistake, but I am glad to think that this is the most serious charge that can be levelled against me during my career as Mayor. —I am, etc., C. E. MACKAY*
