FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT

TRAIN BUNS INTO SLIP,

TWO KILLED; NINE INJURED

A serious accident occurred to the south-bound Main Trunk express this morning. The train when nearing Mataroa ran into a slip. Details received locally so far are meagre, but it is reported that two persons were killed and nine injured, two seriously. It appear that when near Mataroa, the train ran into a slip, telescoping two carriages. Two of the employees in the postal van were killed, and nine of the passengers who were in the telescoped carriages were injured, two seriously so. The accident occurred shortly after six. At the time of writing the names of the killed and injured were not available.

We learn that the names of the unfortunate victims who were killed were: J. H. Williams (married) and B. Martin (single). One of the others has succumbed to his injuries. FURTHER PARTICULARS. WELLINGTON, November 8. A serious accident occurred on the Main Trunk Line at 6 o’clock this morning, when the Auckland express for Wellington ran into a slip one and a half miles north of Mataroa, north of Taihape. Two cars and the mail van were telescoped. Two postal officials were killed, and two elderly male passengers were seriously injured, while two other passengers also sustained injuries. All available medical aid has been sent to the sepne of the accident. Tile injured passengers were transferred to Taihape hospital. The mails and uninjured passengers are being transferred at the slip. It is expected the train will leave Taihape six hours late. WELLINGTON, November 8.

In the railway accident seven passengers were badly injured, and one has since died, while on the way to the Taihape hospital. Two mail agents were dead, when recovered from tlie wreckage. It will take several days to clear the slip.
