BOROUGH PROBLEMS.

To the Editor. Sir,—l was much'surprised in reading the report of the Borough Council of the suggestion made by some of the councillors of the street cleaning. Ist Regret was expressed by some members of the Council that the committee had no recommendation to make. 2nd—Cr. Burnett thought the present system expensive and cumbersome. 3rd —Then comes a doubtful councillor (who is, by the way, a contractor), that contract work would be no gain. 4th—The next councillor is a sympathetic one, who has great sympathy for the staff, and would not like to see them upset (poor fellow). Now, as to the urgent works. I wonder if Cr. Alderton looks upon patching the Avenue about every fortnight urgent, while the grass grows knee-deep in our streets, or is it urgent work to send up two men to the top of Halswell Street to trim down a bank, while the surface water cannot get away from the choked up channels? The Engineer says there are difficulties in the way. Well, sir, to solve the problem, I should recommend the Engineer and Cr. Alderton to call a meeting of the labour portion of the Borough staff, including the two men who use the two push carte, to discuss the matter of street cleaning, and report at the next Borough Council meeting. In conclusion, sir, might I ■ ask if our streets and footpaths are to be left in a disgraceful state. There is plenty of labour to be got.—l am, etc., 1 MIPPO.
