Though there were only rive starters for the Twenty-fifth Challenge Stakes at Kiccarton. the presence <<i Desert Gold in the field invested the contest with more than usual interest. Despite her rather disappointing 'rack work the All Black filly was made a very staunch favourite, though rot a few good judges pinned their faith to Gamecock on the strength of his brilliant isolay in the Champagne Stakes. The race was just a repetition of the many that Desert Gold has contested this past two seasons- Her great turn of speed enabled her to open up a big gap in the early stages; indeed, when half the journey had been covered she was quite four lengths clear of Sasanof and Gamecock. Turning for home, O'Shea took a hold of Desert Gold, and Sasanof\s backers became jubilant. The Melbourne Cup winner struggled on very ramely under pressure, but i>c could not make the least impression on the favourite, who won in her vsual convincing style by a couple of lengths. Gamecock did not finish as well as expected over the last furlong, while Inlying Start was never in xho hunt. The great merit of Desert Gold's disnlay found ample evidence in the fearty reception accorded her on returning to scale. Desert Gold's brilliant success in the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton marked the 19th successive occasion on which she has been first past the post. Altogether during her three years' racing she has started 30 limes, and never been unplaced. She has credited Mr Lowry with £14,265 in stake money, a much larger sum than that won by any other horse in the Dominion. The champion's next public appearance will probably be made at Trentham.
