WHITE ISLAND IN ERUPTION.
(Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, April 9. When the steamer Tarawera waS abreast of White Island at 5-30 yefiter-* day morning, the chief officer observed a volcanic eruption, flame* shooting skyward accompanied by flying stones and debris, which were soon enveloped, in a dense cloud of vapour.
