AMUSEMENTS AND MEETINGS

CHARLIE CHAPLIN. AT HIS MAJESTY’S TO-NIGHT. A programme of high merit is promised at Majesty’s j Theatre tonight, containing two feature attractions, a Vitagraph-Blue Ribbon drama and ,thc latest -Mutual Chqplin comedy, ‘ ‘The Pawnbroker. ” The remarkable Charles is quite at his best in this picture, and ipanages to instil the maximum amount of comicality- into his acting'of''the'part' of the pawnbroker’s assistant- In some ways he proves himself a most conscientious assistant and when a cutomer endeavours, to “pop” an alarm clock a thorough examination is made before the article is handed back to the owner. Charlie finds with the aid of a stethoscope that the interior of the alarm clock is not what it should be, and immediately sets to work to open it with a tin-ope»er. With hammer and chisel he dissects the interior, and being perfectly satisfied that it is now unsaleable hands it back to the would-be seller. There are, of course, a huge villain, “multitudinous fights and chasings, and many other of the ludicrous happenings common to the Chaplin pictures. The second attraction is the Vitagraph frur-acts drama, “Mrs Dane’s Danger,”, the theme of which shows how heedless, innocence has often led a young woman into dangerous positions. Lillian Walker is perfectly suited as the young wife, inclined to be frivolous, who narrowly escapes the hipwreck of her life at the hands of a persistent and reckless lover. Several other films of an entertaining nature will also be shown. EVERYBODY’S. ' '

“SHE” AND “THE REWARD.” Most readers of fiction have read Sir Rider Haggard’s well-known “She,” a picturised version of which will be shown to-night at Everybody’s. “She” must be classed among the spectacular ■ vs, although the romance of Kallikrates and She provides neart-throbs. in abundance. Madame,Alice Delysia, who was specially engaged to play the oart, is spoken of as a wonderfully beautiful woman, with a perfect figure, and makes the most of an exacting part, especially in the big dramatic scenes where She for the second time enters into the Pillar of Fire, and emerges therefrom a wizened old hag, instead of the radiantly beautiful woman, as was expected. Bessie Barriscale, in “The Reward,” takes the part of a chorus girl who finds being good very lonesome work, and when about to enjoy life as her companions did, she discovers that there is a reward for being good, and is able to keep on the narrow' straight path and lead her would-be betrayer along the same road. The supporting programme will include “With the French North' of the Somme,” “Bv the Sad Sea Waves,” comedy, “Villainous Villains” Vitagraph comedy, and the latest Gaumont Graphic.
