SITUATION IN GREECE.
POPULATION BELIEVED BY SUBMISSION.
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, January 27. The Morning Post’s Athens correspondent states that the population is greatly relieved at the Government’s acceptance of the Allies’ ultimatum. All of those outside of the officers’ clubs and the political intriguers have recognsed that it would have been useless to engage in a struggle with the Entente. Everybody was sick of terrorism and stagnant business and visions of famine. Much uneasiness is being felt in Athena concerning the Reservists, who employed lurid language to the very last. The acceptance of the demands enraged the Gounarist coterie, because it upsets their party plans. They now accuse the King of treason and collusion, and predict Venizelos’ early return to Athens. ♦ ALLIED TEEMS AGREED TO. ATHENS, January 27. The Government haa-accepted the list of Allied officers who are to be stationed at the twelve principal towns to exercise military control. The Allies have Authorised sufficient coal for the railways for the transporting of troops. Following a conference with Sir Francis Elliott (British Ambassador), the Government has approved of a decree dissolving the Reservists’ League.
EFFECTS OF THE BLOCKADE. LONDON. January 27. The Daily Chronicle’s Athens correspondent says that after a fifty days’ blockade Greek wheat is exhausted. Now only ryebread( of a small ration) is served in restaurants.
