BRITISH CONTINUING RAIDS

LONDON, January 28. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—We carried out raids eastward of Loos and north-eastward of Vermelles, making prisoners- A number of dug-outs were destroyed. The enemy suffered many casualties.

We bombarded the enemy’s positions northward of the Somme with good results.

Our aeroplanes successfully bombed a number of places behind the lines. Five German machines were destroyed and five were driven down damaged. One of ours is missing. FURTHER BRITISH RAIDS. LONDON, January 28. We raided positions north-east of Neuville St. Vaast, took prisoners, and destroyed dug-outs. Our patrols entered trenches and inflicted casualties north-east of Vermelles. '

North-east _of Arras we dispersed working parties. Our fire northwards of Hulluch caught enemy infantry, inflicting many casualties.

SUCCESSFUL BRITISH BOMBARDMENT.

LONDON, January 28. We bombarded positions in the neigh bourhood of Serre, greatly damaging the defences.

RENEWED ACTIVITY. BIG OFFENSIVE BEGINNING. PARIS, January 28. There is renewed activity by both sides on the West front. The clear, frosty weather seems to indicate the approach of a fresh stage towards the big offensive. The French sector is becoming as lively as that of the British- It ‘is only natural for raidings to have increased vigour. There is already great aerial activity and intensified bombardments. The big offensive may not come immediately, hut everything should he ready in a month or two.
