FIGHTING NEAR VERDUN, GERMAN SUCCESS AT HILL 304. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, January 28. A Gerinan official message claims that the j Westphalians and Badeners stormed the trenches on height 304, on a mile front on the west bank of the Meuse, inicting sanguinary losses. The French night counter-attack failed. We have occupied further positions on both sides of the river, and repulsed counter-attacks on the east bank. We took 500 prisoners. FRENCH REGAIN LOST GROUND. LONDON, January 28A French communique says:—Fresh reports show that the enemy attack on the left bank of the Meuse yesterday was particularly violent. Several German regiments participated, and there was hand-to-hand fighting at some points."" We counter-attacked this morning, and re-took in the region of Hill 304 the greater portion of the elt ■ments within which the enemy haa penetrated. There was a fairly lively artillery struggle on the right bank of the Meuse, in the region of fßezonvaux, l/ouojoy and Woevre, and im the sectors at Regnivelle and Vehoe.

GOOD WORK BY FRENCH AIRMEN. LONDON, January 28. A French communique says:—Two of our aeroplanes bombed the railway, station and military workshops at Ham (in the Noyon sector), causing a fire and a big explosion. GERMAN WORKS DESTROYED. LONDON, January 28. A French communique says:—We destructively bombarded German works on the sector at Hill 304. Five eney aeroplanes were brought down, including Lieutenant Guyneer’s thirtieth. BRITISH AIRMEN BUSY. MUCH DAMAGE TO ENEMY WORKSLONDON, January 28. Seven enemy aeroplanes were brought down. Our air squadrons heavily bombed several railway stations, also hutments and military establishments, and caused a great fire at the railway station at Brieulles.
