GERMAN SUBMARINES.

BRITISH NAVY DESTROYING MANY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, January 26. The Daily Chronicle’s expert says there is a strong suspicion that the British Navy is destroying many more enemy submarines than is officially announced. The Admiralty does not publish the lists. It is certain, however, that the enemy is building submarines faster than they are being destroyed, and our tonnage losses are increasing. Germany claims that she sank 300,000 British tons in November and 419,166 tons in December, and a total since the war of 2,947,475 tons. Official British figures admit the loss of 785,575 tons from January to October. The tonnage of the new British ships launched during the war until September 30th is 1,873,985. Building was never more rapid than now. Nearly fifty standardised cargo steamers which are now being constructed represent half a million tons. The United States is building at the rate of over 100,000 tons monthly.
