ALLEGED BURGLARY.

OLD LADY’S PLUCKY FIGHT. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 25. James Ridling, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial at Pukekohe yesterday on a charge of burglary on January 12th. Mrs Leach deposed that she retired about 11 p.m. Later, she heard six loud knocks on the front door. Then the kitchen window was smashed, and a man entered her bedroom. He sat on the floor and slid towards her. She jumped out of bed and caught up a knife. The man sprang at her and caught her hands. They struggled together, and she, getting exhausted, stabbed her assailant through the hand. He fled from the bedroom, and she followed him, opened the door and drove him out. Her age was 78 in June last. She was living alone, and her eyesight was bad.
