WANGANUI VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.
The members of the above held their annual smoke concert on Wednesday evening in the Brigade Hall, Superintendent Spriggens presiding over a large attendance of members and a number of citizens. Amongst those present were tne Mayor (Mr C; E. Mackay) and several Councillors, colonel Hughes,‘Major Harper, Lieut. Dixon, ex-Captain Powell, Messrs E. Campbell, E. Perrett, T. B. Williams, and Archdeacon Reeve. The usual toast list was honoured, and due tribute paid to those members of the* Brigado-who have been killed or ■wounded at the front. During ah Interval in the-proceedings the Mayor presented the following long service bars:—Gold bar, Superintendent Spriggens, 3 3 years’ sendee; silver bars, Deputy-Superintendent Perrett, 19 years; Foreman A.-Halligan, 19 vnai'i" wij-p'-ioii (3. R, Smith (13 jj’ears), F. McCulloch and B. Smiley tii years each), and W. Halligan (9 years). Competition trophtes were presented as under :■ —Spriggens Shield: Foreman W. Piper,' Firemen P. Begley, R. Frizzell, W. Lund, and S. Wells. Merryweather Shield; Foreman W. Finer. Firemen H. Langridge, G. R. Smith, S. Wells, rnd E. Smiley. Perrett Cup: Foreman W. Piper. Hallenstein Clock; Foreman W. Piper and Fireman W. Price. One Man Ladder Event: Fireman Donald McDougall. Rescue Event (two men): Firemen P. Beauchamp and S. Wells. The proceedings were enlivened by a number of songs, recitations, etc., a pleasant evening being spent, though in view of the war the function was not on such an elaborate scale as In previous years.
