MARTON JOCKEY CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. (From Our Special Reporter.) The above meeting drew a large attendance of sporting enthusiasts to the Marton racecourse yesterday, mid, despite the showery weather and the slippery state of the track, the racing was very good, large fields facing the harrier in most of the races. The Hon. J. D. Ormond Sent five horses over, and was successful in winning the Maiden with Hydrus, the Electric Hack with •Hvgeia, and secured a second in tho Tutaenui Hack Welter with Hylatus, who was just beaten by half a length. The Taranaki-owned gelding, Fortify, won the Marton Handicap nicely, though it looked as if Imarose , would have troubledhim had he got away better. Mr Wire Tokena’s fine-looking Bonifonn mare. Mia Cara, annexed the Railway Handicap in a very hollow fashion. There were several spills in the jumping events, but none of the riders were injured. Mr Arthur Way, the popular secretary, carried out his duties in his usual up-to-date style, and the success of the meeting was in a largo measure due to his and the various other officials’ good work. The sum of -Cio.loG was put through the totalisator, as against the sum of £13.405 for the club’s meeting last scaMDO. The Marton Band, under Conductor A. E. Crozior, added greatly to tlie day’s enjovment by the fine programme of music thev provided. Messrs Dustins. Ltd., provided an excellent luncheon. Discussion had a lead of two lengths entering the straight, and passed the post half a .lengthen front of Hvlatus, who came very fust up the straight. Iceberg ran very well for sever; furlongs.
