WANGANUI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the annual report of the above Society for the season, 1913-11: In presenting the annual report for the past season your committee report the holding of two shows since the last annual meeting held on November 7th, 1913. This was decided upon owing to the inauguration of a now system whereby the Bulb Shpw became the first show of the season instead of the last. The date of the annual meeting was put forward to July so that the new arrangements might become possible. The two shows held were a Bose, Sweet Pea, and Carnation Show on December 10th, 1913, and an. Autumn Show on February 13th, 191U Both shows from an exhibitor's standpoint wore entirely successful, but from a financial aspect, wore very disappointing. On both occasions strong counter attractions were in progress, and those militated against success, but it mast bo confessed that very little enthusiasm has been shown by many of the members themselves. Mr Gower, as supervisor of the show arrangements, deserves a word of congratulation. 11 is method was excellent and ensured an artistic display on hoth occasions. Mrs Snisted, as assistant secretary, was a host in herself, and her work has been beyona praise. The ladies, who undertook the arrangements for afternoon tea, also deserve the heartiest thanks of the Society. The financial condition of the Society demands your earnest consideration. There is still a large amount, in the shape of subscriptions, outstanding. The heavy expense in connection with the shows, the purchase of new' plant, and the failure of many to pay their subsetiptions have resulted in the disappearance of last, year's credit balance of £22. Unless the Society is put upon a- better financial haem by a little more enthusiasm being displayed by the general public; its days as a public body are numbered. It is proposed to hold two shows during the ensuing season with the possibility of a third show to he held in February. This will be discussed at the annual meeting. The President of the Society—W. J. Treadwell, Esq.—has donated a rose howl for competition, and other members have promised trophies, so the new year is full of hope if members generally and, the public in particular, only .get busy on show r days. For the Committee.—Yours sincerely, W. B. SCOTT, Hon. Sec.
