The Baptist Missionary' Society has received advices from Matadi, dated the middle of February, showing that after peace had been declared, following the Rev. BowskilJ’s efforts at mediation, the Portuguese officials arrested a gum her of native Christians. The effect was electrical. The war was renewed. San Salvador was burnt, and the Portuguese driven within the fortress. The besieged people arfe short gf. water and the insurgents shoot everyone trying to reach water. The whole country is excited. The Rev. Bowskill told Paulo (the Portuguese official in charge of the fortress) that his action, had inflamed the country. Paulo then detained the Rev. Bowskill. REV. BOWSKiLL’S RELEASE . ORDERED. Received March 6. 9.20 a.m. LISBON, March 5. The Portuguese Government has ordered the Rev. Bow skill’s release.
